Tina Peters is coming home! The elections cabal is furious.
Governor Jared Polis announced Friday that he is commuting the sentence of Tina Peters and making her eligible for parole on June 1st.
Peters issued an official statement shortly after the news broke:
“I made mistakes, and for those I am sorry. Five years ago I misled the Secretary of State when allowing a person to gain access to county voting equipment. That was wrong. I have learned and grown during my time in prison and going forward I will make sure that my actions always follow the law, and I will avoid the mistakes of the past.
I strongly condemned it when people not connected to me threatened to storm the prison I am in. I myself have faced threats, so, I also want to be clear that I condemn any and all bullying, threats and acts of violence against voters, county clerks, election workers, and other public officials, and concerned citizens like myself.
Upon release, I plan to do my best through legal means to support election integrity and based on my own personal experiences to elevate the cause of prison reform to help ensure the detention system is more fair and equitable for people of all ages. My experiences have given me a perspective that plan to share with others to improve Colorado’s corrections system. I am grateful for a second chance and an earlier release, and I look forward to doing good in the world.”

The elections cabal is furious. Secretary of State Jena Griswold said in a statement:
“This clemency grant to Tina Peters is an affront to our democracy, the people of Colorado, and election officials across the country. The Governor’s actions today will validate and embolden the election denial movement, and leave a dark, dangerous imprint on American democracy for years to come.”
The secretary’s statement comes one day after The Atlantic published an editorial entitled, “The Election Deniers are Winning.”
Indeed.
Matt Crane and the Colorado County Clerks Association are also very upset.
“We are furious, disgusted, and deeply disappointed by the Governor’s decision. We have met with him privately to make our position unmistakably clear: Tina Peters deserves the accountability imposed through Colorado’s judicial system, and the Governor should, at the very least, respect that process and allow it to fully play out before intervening.”

I will be visiting Tina Peters at the La Vista Correctional Facility tomorrow, May 16, in a visit that has been planned for several weeks. I think it’s going to be a much happier visit than I previously anticipated!
