No podcast today. My son had a band concert, and all the excitement of the trial stream wore me out. Missy and I will be back live tomorrow!
“It is the first day of November and so, today, someone will die.”
-Maggie Stiefvater
It’s seriously crazy that there are this many National Days. Check this out:
Okay, let’s talk about the Day of the Dead in Mexico. Mexico’s Day of the Dead is celebrated today and tomorrow – honoring deceased children and infants on November 1 and dead adults on November 2.
It’s also the first day of of “Movember,” an awareness campaign for men’s health that focuses on mental health, suicide, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. “Whatever you grow will save a bro,” is the tagline and, as a woman that lives in a frat house surrounded by men, this is a national month I can get on board with. That said, my last corporate office observed Movember, and it proved to me that not every man should have facial hair.
Finally, there are only 60 days left until the new year, and it’s Hello Kitty’s Birthday. Now let’s get onto today’s history…
In Government…
In 1683, the English crown colony of New York was subdivided into 12 counties. Then in 1765, the Stamp Act went into effect in the British Colonies. A little over ten years later the American colonies declared independence. Taxation is theft.
In 1800, John Adams became the first US president to reside in the White House. In 1911, the first aerial bomb was dropped – it was delivered by an Italian pilot in Libya during the Italo-Turkish War.
There were loads of US nuclear tests on November 1 but, in 1952, Operation Ivy was conducted. This was the first large hydrogen bomb dropped by the US on the Marshall Islands. It was codenamed “Ivy Mike” [“M” for megaton].
And in 1971, the Eisenhower Dollar was put into circulation. Lots of money stuff in 1971…

In Culture…
We had some interesting cultural moments today. In 1512, Michelangelo's paintings in the Sistine Chapel were first displayed in the Vatican, and in 1604 William Shakespeare's tragedy "Othello" was first presented. Seven years later on the same day in 1611, “The Tempest” was first presented.
In 1894, the vaccine for diphtheria was announced by Dr Émile Roux of Paris. And thus began global population reduction via vaccines. Speaking of eugenics, in 1921, the National Birth Control League merged with the Voluntary Parenthood League to become the American Birth Control League, and in 1939 the first animal was conceived by artificial insemination. It was a rabbit.
In 1954, the Senate admonished Joseph McCarthy for his “slander campaigns.” Also, McCarthy was right.
In 1959, hockey player Jacques Plante invented the hockey mask. Next we need to do neck guards.
In media and entertainment, in 1967 the film "Cool Hand Luke" was released and, 30 years later, the “Titanic” premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival in 1997. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1998. I’ll never let go, Jack.
