The Power of Positions - The Evolution of the Chief Diversity Officer
Culture of Change - Episode 21 Show Notes
The story arc of the Chief Diversity Officer, a C-level position in at least 75% of corporations according to the Wall Street Journal, is reaching its ultimate, obvious conclusion.
Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) in the workplace had a good run. The appointment of senior leadership to focus on division in the workplace was pitched as a social imperative and a table stakes investment for companies' ability to compete in our socially conscious world.
The only problem is, it didn’t work.
Public sentiment of the “socially conscious world” was highly manufactured and, as a result, corporate equity initiatives created the most divisive American workplaces in modern history. With the recent Supreme Court decision to end Affirmative Action in universities, corporations appear to be tacking right in anticipation of legal challenges. Worse, corporate equity hurts the bottom line. Just ask Target. Or Bud Light.
Tonight on Culture of Change, we break down how we got here, discuss the real stakeholders of DEI, and expose the change tactics at play inside corporations — and in the world around us.
